History of Frank and Mary’s, a Pittsboro Indiana landmark

Frank and Mary’s was started by Frank and Mary Herring in 1945 at the end of World War II, just as rationing was ended. Frank started by selling beer and fish sandwiches from the front room of his house. The business was in two other buildings prior to moving into the present building in the early 1960’s. The business finally had room to grow and a much larger parking lot. The current building was built in 1916 as an Overland Auto dealership. The building changed occupants over the years and has housed everything from a chicken hatchery to an aircraft electronics factory.

Frank and Mary’s has been a Herring family business from the beginning. Five generations have carried on the proud tradition of serving great food for a reasonable price. Frank and Mary with the assistance of Frank’s father Charlie were the first two generations to work together. The third generation included Frank and Mary’s sons, Bob and Richard and Bob’s wife Helen. The fourth generation included Bob’s sons, Tom and Larry, Larry’s wife Donna and Richard’s son Jeff. Larry and Donna’s son Alex is the only member of the fifth generation active in the business.
